Extra public holiday in 2022 for South Africans

THE Christmas weekend will be a little longer for South Africans this year after President Cyril Ramaphosa declared Tuesday, 27 December a national public holiday.

When a public holiday falls on a Sunday, the following day is deemed the official day for the public holiday.

Christmas Day this year falls on a Sunday, followed by the Day of Goodwill public holiday on the Monday, effectively short-changing citizens from one public holiday to which they are entitled under the Public Holidays Act 36 of 1994.

This declaration follows in terms of Section 2A of the Act.

Section 5 of the Act entitles workers to 11 public holidays in a year.

“In view of the unique circumstances around the 2022 calendar, and to uphold relevant labour law principles and practices, President Ramaphosa has declared Tuesday, 27 December a public holiday in lieu of Christmas Day,” read the statement.
