Give the gift of life this festive season – donate blood

Public urged to donate blood during festive season

DURING the festive season, blood stocks drastically drop owing to regular blood donors going on holiday or not visiting their blood donation clinics.

There is also higher demand owing to an elevated number of serious road accidents, for example.

The SA National Blood Service (SANBS) is appealing to donors and potential donors to give the gift of life during the festive season.

A minimum five-day blood stock level is needed to maintain a sufficient blood supply normally, but especially during the holiday season.

Blood is administered to an array of patients in need, ranging from operations, childbirth, to road accidents and trauma.

“This festive season, our theme is ‘You’ve got so much to give’. Blood donation takes only 30 minutes of your time, and you can save up to three lives with one donation,” said Marike Gevers of the SANBS.

“If you are between the ages of 16 and 75, weigh 50kg or more, are in good general health, and lead a safe sexual lifestyle, you should be able to donate,” added Gevers.

The closest blood bank for Zululanders is located on the lower level of Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre in Richards Bay.
