THE Young Communist League of South Africa (YCLSA) says it is disappointed by the lack of consideration by the government for the interests of workers and their families.

“The cost of living and a reduction of real income is due to the lack of implementation of the last public sector collective agreement. The unbearable truth is that it is the working class, in general, that is carrying the burden of the crisis of social reproduction in this country.

“Even the high number of unemployed are, in many instances, financially taken care of by those in their families who are fortunate to have jobs,” said Thakhudi.

He added that they are disappointed with the way acting Minister of Public Services and Administration Thulas Nxesi has handled this labour dispute.

“It is disingenuous for him and other cabinet ministers to claim they are giving workers a 7.5% increase when they know the

R1 000 non-pensionable and non-taxable amount they are offering to workers is not new but simply maintaining a short-term solution they made in previous negotiations.

“The continuation of this R1 000 social grant for workers means the government will come to every negotiation claiming it increased workers’ pay by 4.5% and avoid taking it away, as this will demonstrate that public sector workers’ wages are lower than before.

“It is significant to note the continued unity of workers from different sectors and federations throughout these negotiations, disputes and attempts to demobilise the workers. The unity and solidarity of workers remain essential in this fight against a government hell-bent on implementing austerity measures,” he said.

Thakhudi added that it was upon themselves as the youth of this country to join this revolutionary movement as it not only affects South Africa nationally but also at a household level.

“For young communists, this is an opportunity for us to stand in solidarity with the working class and directly confront the capitalist system as we advance the creation of a workers’ movement and the poor in pursuit of socialism,” he said.
