Alcohol checkpoints, roadblocks planned for festive season at iSimangaliso Wetland Park

Christmas season planning gets underway

PLANS in preparation for the festive season are underway at iSimangaliso Wetland Park.

The park’s communications manager Bheki Manzini said preparations include holding stakeholder meetings, which would also include the local police and municipalities.

Up for discussion at the planning meetings will be operational issues such as where checkpoints will be set up at the park, among other pertinent matters.

Manzini said the aim was to ensure the safety of park visitors and tourists, as well as ensuring those items not permitted into the park, such as alcohol on the beach, are not smuggled in.

“When people are under the influence of alcohol, they tend to be less vigilant which may result in drownings at our beaches. We are a protected area, which is why the consumption of alcohol at the beach is prohibited,” said Manzini.

He explained that the checkpoints, some of which will be manned by the local police, will be set up to ensure the protection and safety of visitors and tourists.

It was hoped by the park that the closure of some Durban beaches would increase tourist traffic in this direction, said Manzini.
