Affected areas include Hlabisa, Hluhluwe, Jozini, Mtubatuba, Nongoma, uMhlathuze and Pongola.

According to the SAWS warning, widespread rainfall leading to localised flooding of susceptible settlements, low-lying areas, roads and bridges are expected over the northern parts of KZN on Sunday.

“Models are indicating scattered thundershowers and rainfall accumulation of up to 80mm in places over the north-eastern parts of KZN,” said the warning.

The weather service urges citizens to stay indoors where possible, and to avoid low-level crossings, rivers and low-lying areas.

Impacts include possibility of localised mudslides and soil erosion, damage to informal settlements, and flooding of roads and low-lying areas.

Motorists are reminded to reduce speed on wet roads and in areas of poor visibility and to take extra caution on roads riddled with potholes that could be filled with water presenting the increased risk of sinkholes.
