Council for Geoscience says quakes are no cause for panic as experts investigate

KZN hit by two quakes in two days, both measuring 3.9 on local magnitude scale

THE Council for Geoscience (CGS) today (Sunday) confirmed that two separate earthquakes, along separate fault lines, occurred in KZN this weekend.

Saturday’s quake, which occurred just after 2.30pm and was felt by residents across Zululand, registered a preliminary 3.9 on the local magnitude scale, while the second quake occurred this morning at about 9.30am, also measuring a preliminary 3.9 on the local magnitude scale.

The preliminary epicentre for Saturday’s quake was 40km northeast of Greytown and 30km east of Tugela Ferry, while today’s quake’s preliminary epicentre was Mnkangala, 40km north of Kokstad.

The CGS said that, while the quakes did not occur along the same geological fault, they may be inter-related on a regional scale.

“Moreover, the CGS would like to assure the South African public that there is no cause for panic,” said the CGS in a statement.

“A team of technical experts is analysing the preliminary epicentre locations and magnitudes.”

The CGS is custodian of the SANSN which monitors seismic wave activities throughout South Africa.
