According to IPSS Medical Rescue’s Dylan Meyrick, the sedan had eight occupants, five of which were deceased on impact.

“Three others were injured – two in a critical condition and one with minor injuries. They were transported to a local facility for further care. The bakkie had two occupants, who were treated for serious injuries and transported to a local facility. The police and fire department are on scene and are investigating the cause of the crash,” said Meyrick.

IPSS had responded to an earlier accident scene on the N2 Zinkwazi when they were alerted to the second crash near Tugela.

 Tanker collision
Earlier this morning, there was also another serious accident involving two tankers on the R34 just before the uMfolozi Bridge. One person was killed and another injured in the collision.

Motorists are reminded to reduce speed on wet roads and in areas of poor visibility, increase following distance and switch on headlights.

This comes as the South African Weather Service (SAWS) issued a level 2 warning for disruptive rain over parts of KZN including the Zululand region today.
