IT has been a traumatic week for women living in KZN as the death toll of brutally murdered females rises.

Five women were recently discovered in different incidents in the Durban area.

The first two victims’ bodies, Enhle Majozi (18) and Sithembile Ngobese (23), were discovered at the crime scene after sustaining fatal gunshot wounds by a suspect who is alleged to be a police officer.

In another incident, authorities discovered two female bodies at Mahes Road in Isipingo.
A further body of an unidentified woman, who also sustained fatal gunshot wounds, was discovered at a hostel in KwaMashu.

The Zululand Observer recently reported on the death of Nkosingiphile Sipheshihle Mthembu (32) who was found dead, with her hands bound, in the bushes in Alton in Richards Bay.

In all these killings, the motive for the murders is unknown.

This bloodbath has instilled fear within women across the province, with local females raising concerns about their safety and the infringement of their basic human right – the right to life.

Richards Bay resident Philile Khoza recently had a near death experience that left her traumatised.

“About a month ago, I was almost abducted. I was walking from the driving school and I saw a car across the road,” she said.

“I carried on walking, and there were two men inside the car. Out of nowhere, one guy popped out and said ‘she is worth a lot of money and that they should take her.

“I ran for my life towards the rank and they drove off.”

Empangeni resident Nomfundo Luthuli said she does not feel safe anywhere. “I don’t even feel safe in my car; we live in a very scary world,” she said.

Investigations are pending in all cases, and the fight against women abuse continues.
