Spotlight on mental health

Untreated mental health illness can affect your physical wellbeing

THIS Mental Health Awareness Month, attention must be given to the physical impact of not addressing such challenges.

In a statement released by NGO Rhiza Babuyile, Katlego Assis, Enterprise and Supplier Development and Projects Manager stated: “Mental illness is not ‘all in the mind’, rather it is a physical manifestation of neurological and chemical imbalances.

“There are many ways the body warns you that your brain or central nervous system is in distress and needs your attention.

“One of the most common signs of acute mental illness is a drastic change in blood pressure or blood sugar levels.’’

People are encouraged to check their vitals to detect any changes.

“According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), mental disorders are the leading cause of disability,” continued Assis.

“Not everyone with a mental illness is disabled, but some illnesses can become so severe they cause people to become disabled.’’

People are encouraged to seek help if they present with mental health-related symptoms, as most are treatable.

“Much of the suffering that comes with mental illness can be managed, alleviated and even prevented.

“Regular health checks, paying attention to your body and getting professional help are important to maintain a healthy body and mind.”
