Scammer suspect gets off scot free as cops fail to make arrest

Hundreds of job seekers who flooded Empangeni County Club with intentions of handing out their curriculum vitae escorted the man outside the premises

A MAN suspected of scamming desperate job seekers managed to escape the clutches of scores of angry Zululanders in Empangeni on Wednesday.

Hundreds of job seekers who flooded Empangeni County Club with intentions of handing out their curriculum vitae escorted the man outside the premises after learning the job opportunities promised were nothing but a scam.

According to victims, they all responded to an advertisement which was posted on ‘Richards Bay Jobs and Business Opportunities’.

The advertisement stated that 30 client services assistants were needed, and called for interested parties to submit their CVs.

However, according to applicants, when they arrived at the venue, they were asked to pay R30 to scan their documents, and that’s when they suspected the ad was nothing but a scam.

“We were hoping this would change our lives because they promised a basic salary of R7 500, an added cell phone allowance, medical aid, commission and even a performance bonus.

“They only needed a Grade 12 certificate and training was supposed to be provided which made us want to apply because we need jobs,” said a 30-year-old applicant.

However, in a surprising twist of events, according to the King Cetshwayo police cluster spokesperson Capt Siyanda Shangase, police couldn’t open a case as no one was willing to to make statements against the suspect.
