Climate-resilient infrastructure a priority for sustainable economy

Improperly operating infrastructure disrupts the chain of production

FOLLOWING April’s devastating floods and last year’s riot-related infrastructure damage, climate-resilient infrastructure is needed for sustainable economic growth in KZN.

This was the call of the South African Local Government Association (Salga) chairperson Thami Ntuli at a recent three-day meeting.

Salga KZN hosted an Infrastructure Delivery, Spatial Transformation, and Sustainability Councillors’ Induction for those responsible for economic development and planning, community services, and environmental and waste management to engage.

“Given the rapid climate change, climate-resilient infrastructure must be a buzz phrase in local government,” said Ntuli.

“Salga in KZN notes that when the infrastructure is not operating properly, the chain of production in the province and country is disrupted.

“This disruption hinders economic growth, development and community services, which results in a low standard of living.”

An assessment by the Department of Trade and Industry revealed that the damage to KZN companies was estimated at R7-million.

Ntuli said they strategically planned the induction, combining three portfolios specifically because the issues of infrastructure affect all these areas.
