No answers in case of ‘seismic activity’ near Richards Bay

Many Zululanders felt the earth move under their feet

WHILE the cause of Monday night’s seismic-like event that reportedly occurred northeast of Richards Bay has not been established, with only unconfirmed reports appearing online, more than 300 Zululanders reported to have felt the earth move under their feet.

Residents of Richards Bay, Empangeni, eSikhaleni, KwaDlangezwa, Ongoye, Ngwelezana, Port Durnford, eShowe, Felixton and Mzingazi reported hearing a rumbling noise and feeling a tremor shortly before 9pm.

There were substantial variations in the severity of the event, with some Meerensee residents not feeling a thing but reported to have heard a distant rumbling noise; Arboretum residents reporting rolling thunder and a slight tremor; while one Port Durnford resident said the tremor cracked his sliding door.

The epicentre was initially reported on volcanodiscovery.com as being 70km northeast of Richards Bay, but by

Tuesday afternoon, was reported as having been 4.4km north of the Bay.
