Further delays to Richards Bay road repairs as sub-standard work is rejected

Work at Medway intersection has been ongoing for two months

MOTORISTS travelling between Meerensee/Mzingazi and the rest of Richards Bay will have to endure further delays to road repairs at the Medway intersection on the John Ross highway after the contractor’s sub-standard work was rejected.

This is according to Ward 2 Councillor Christo Botha who made the announcement this afternoon (Tuesday).

“The contractor was instructed to redo the work. I advised the deputy city manager for infrastructure that contractors delivering sub-standard work must be red-flagged from obtaining future contracts,” said Botha on his Ward 2 uMhlathuze Facebook page.

Commuters using this stretch of the highway have become accustomed to the barriers and road closure, as repairs to this section of road have been ongoing for two months.

While the left lane has been reopened, the ongoing roadworks cause delays, severely impacting traffic at rush hour.

The Medway intersection has become a nightmare as impatient motorists use the right-only lanes to continue straight, placing others’ safety at risk.

The cause of these roadworks was a burst pipe that runs beneath the road. An ongoing problem over the past two years at least, the main water pipe splits at the Medway junction, with one section feeding Meerensee and the other supplying Small Craft Harbour.

Continual bursts and leaks at the split have caused havoc in recent years, with the road having to be dug up numerous times.

Councillor Botha did not indicate when work will be completed.
