Lion sighting outside Empangeni false, says conservation authority

Most recent 'lion on the loose' sighting disputed

THE alleged sighting on Wednesday of three lions by residents of Mkhandlwini in KwesakwaBiyela has been backed up by local Inkosi Phiwainkosi Biyela, despite being reported as false by Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife.

Speaking to the Zululand Observer today (Thursday), Inkosi Biyela said the animals harassing livestock have been reported in various areas within his area, including Lumbi, Mfulawozi, eMkhandlwini and Munywana.

“Over sixteen cows have been reported missing thus far in KwesakwaBiyela. I can confirm that some have been found dead while others have not been found,” said Biyela.

He stated that he could not at this moment shift all the blame for the missing cows onto Ezemvelo KZN Wildlife and uMfulawozi Private Game Reserve because thieves have found a loophole to carry out their operations amid this unfortunate situation.

“I can confirm that tomorrow I will meet with Ezemvelo. I am pleading with them to fix the broken fence; likewise, I ask the people of my clan to respect the property of Ezemvelo,” said Biyela.

Meanwhile, Ezemvelo spokesperson Musa Mntambo said, “Makhamisa field rangers have been to the site where the person reported the three lions feeding on a freshly-killed cow. They have met the people and have searched the area in question, but no signs of the lions.

“[Also] no signs of a cow carcass. The people now say they didn’t see the lion or a dead cow, they only heard a noise from the bushes.”
