WATCH: Cold Friday as snowfall reduces visibility on N3

Reduced visibility and icy conditions between Van Reenen and Harrismith

DRIVING has become treacherous on the N3 toll route today (Friday) as motorists are warned of reduced visibility and icy conditions.

While the worst of the weather is between Van Reenen and Harrismith in the Free State, and not expected to head this way, Zululanders also experienced a cold, wet start to the weekend this morning.

Despite this European-style snowfall and 4 degree weather affecting our inland neighbours, the Zululand region appears to be in for a glorious winter weekend of full sunshine.

The SA Weather Service (SAWS) has predicted disruptive snowfall for the southern Drakensberg region over the next few days.

As of 1pm today, KZN Emergency Medical Services (EMS) reported Van Reenen’s Pass on the N3 to have been closed, with traffic diverted onto the N11 via the Amajuba Pass, although heavy snowfall has also been reported in that vicinity.

Imminent closure of Amajuba Pass is expected.

KZN residents planning on heading north out of the province today or over the weekend are advised to delay travel.

Elsewhere in the province, motorists are urged to exercise caution on the wet roads by increasing their following distance, switching on headlights and decreasing speed.
