WATCH: uMfolozi mayor pleads with Eskom to be patriotic
The municipality mediated between the power utility and residents affected by ongoing load reduction
UMFOLOZI Mayor Xolani Bhengu on Monday urged Eskom to be “patriotic” at a meeting between Eskom and wards affected by ongoing load reduction.
The meeting was called after community members on Saturday closed the road between Mzingazi and Kondweni with municipal skips and burning rubbish.

Communities in the five affected wards called on the municipal leadership to come up with a solution to end the power outages that last up to four hours daily.
Addressing the media after Monday’s meeting, Bhengu said the municipality mediated between Eskom and the affected residents, to find an amicable solution to the ordeal.
“We have spoken with all parties involved, and it emerged there are problems here and there. What we have agreed upon is that Eskom can go ahead with customer audits to see if all Customer Interference Units (CIU) are legal,” said Bhengu.
Likewise, Bhengu said the power utility was tasked with conducting a thorough investigation on who is authorised to sell electricity units because in the meeting it was revealed that a number of customers purchase electricity from “bogus merchants”.
