Second consecutive clean audit for KZN Legislature

The institution's officials had heeded the call for the legislature to lead by example by prudently managing resources to benefit citizens

VIGILANCE and good governance contributed towards the second consecutive clean audit outcome for the KZN Legislature.

Speaker Nontembeko Boyce said the institution’s officials had heeded the call for the legislature to lead by example by prudently managing resources to benefit citizens.

“When we began the sixth administration in 2019, we sat with our management and emphasised that it was important to exercise vigilance to ensure good governance standards were adhered to,” said Boyce.

“The political leadership did not only make a clarion call for management to ensure it handled the public purse with care and implement legislature programmes effectively, but it also worked closely with management to ensure our vision was implemented.”

She said the legislature managed to execute its mandate with distinction, even during the Covid-19 lockdown.

“When the pandemic struck, the legislature quickly moved to digital platforms to ensure the work was not disrupted,” Boyce said.

“We organised the requisite IT infrastructure to ensure everyone had access to virtual platforms. This meant all meetings were done online.

“We also developed ICT mechanisms which ensured our public participation mandate was not affected. We did this by making sure the public was able to participate in our online programmes without paying even a cent.”

She thanked the office of the Auditor-General for its continued support and guidance, which made it possible for the legislature to achieve its set targets.

Legislature secretary Nerusha Naidoo said the institution continued to excel because the political leadership encouraged high standards of integrity and ethical values.
