Five things to do in Richards Bay this summer

#SizzleCity takes on a literal meaning at this time of year, so here are some places and activities to cool you down this summer

Sizzle City takes on a literal meaning at this time of year, and this summer is no exception as temperatures have already soared to the high 30s and low 40s.

From enjoying the outdoors responsibly – don’t forget your sun screen – to taking a dip in the ocean or cooling off under the aircon of a mall or restaurant, here are just five of the many activities Richards Bay has to offer.

It’s ideal swimming weather, so head down to Alkantstrand, now that rehabilitation is complete and the beach has been reopened to the public.

Take your sun screen, hats and a picnic for the family to enjoy, and take a dip in the sea.

Remember to swim between the lifeguards’ red and yellow flags for your safety.

Dolphin viewing platform

Had enough of the sea and the sand? Take a short walk to the main pier at Alkantstrand, and to the dolphin viewing platform at the end.

From here, you may be fortunate enough to spot the rare and endangered humpback dolphin that is resident in Richards Bay’s coastal waters.

You may be lucky enough to also spot a humpback whale or two, the last of these migrating mammals as they return to the cooler waters of the Antarctic.

Pelican Island

A quieter beach where you can take your dogs for a walk or paddle in the calm waters, or you and your family and friends can enjoy a beach picnic, Pelican Island is the gem of the city.

Parking is limited though, and access is via a single-lane causeway, so be sure to get there early.

There are no lifeguards here as this is not a designated swimming beach.

Tuzi Gazi Waterfront

After your swim at Alkantstrand or your walk along Pelican Island, you may well have worked up an appetite.

Tuzi Gazi Waterfront at Richards Bay’s Small Craft Harbour offers a variety of restaurants where you can enjoy a hearty lunch or just a drink to round off your day while you watch the sun set.

Shopping malls

If the outdoors is not your ‘thing’ or you would prefer your meal in the coolness of an aircon, consider one of Richards Bay’s shopping centres, which offer a variety of restaurants, as well as good shopping.
