Public uproar over incomplete Mtubatuba road

The roadworks programme was meant to run from 4 April to 13 May

MTUBATUBA Municipality is mum over allegations that its road maintenance programme has not reached all wards under its jurisdiction.

The programme was announced during Integrated Development Plan (IDP) roadshows in April, and was expected to run from 4 April to 13 May, with one grader allocated to various wards.

”The grader will be expected to work according to the number of days allocated per ward, then relocate to another ward,” said the municipality at the time.

On Friday, former ward 3 councillor Siyabonga Khumalo alleged that the grader was sent to wards run by ‘certain councillors’, adding it was important for the Department of Transport to intervene because “the roads are damaged”.

“Before, the grader would spend three days in each ward. Today we do not even know how much time it works in a ward,” Khumalo alleged.

He said the municipality should be held accountable and not politicise the maintenance of roads.

A resident of ward 7 posted several photographs on social media of gravel roads in a bad state. The resident said quarry stones were needed to fix the gravel roads which were difficult to navigate after rainfall.

It has been reported before that ward 5 residents had similar complaints.

Mtubatuba Municipality acting communications manager Khulekani Msweli was sent a media enquiry last Friday, to which he said he would attend on Monday.

However, no response has been received.
