This after two families from the area filed missing person reports in recent months.

“An inquest docket has been opened pending the results of the DNA tests,” said Hlabisa.

Sanele Mthethwa, who discovered the remains and is neighbour to the Msweli family – one of those who filed a missing persons report – said that on Friday,

24 June one of the Mswelis asked him to escort her to a nearby forest to identify what they had been told were human bones.

“On the Saturday morning we went there and saw what looked like human bones.

“We then informed the local councillor,” Mthethwa said.

He said the police were at the scene on the Monday, and by that evening, the bones were removed by forensics.

Mthethwa said the Msweli family member who had gone missing, Sibongiseni Khoza, had left home for the forest and never returned, and that the other missing person, an elderly from the Mlungwana family, had gone to the same forest.

Ward Councillor Ntokozo Mlungwana said this forest area, which is in the California section of the ward, is used by some community members for farming.

Mlungwana said it is hoped the DNA tests will provide some closure for one of these families.

He said the likelihood is very low that foul play was the cause of the missing persons.
