FROM landscaping rubble to hardware waste, illegal dumping is a growing concern in and around the City of uMhlathuze.
Community members are affected by the pollution resulting from discarded waste in residential areas and near river beds.

The Zululand Observer has covered a number of stories highlighting this challenge in Empangeni CBD, Ngwelezana and eSikhaleni.
City of uMhlathuze communications manager Bongani Gina said the city urges the public to report such cases as culprits may be punishable for their criminal offences.
“On the law enforcement side, if we receive the complaint, it is investigated. If we find the culprit, we issue an Abatement or Compliance Notice that says the culprit must cease their illegal activities within a specified period,” he said.
“If nothing has been done, we contact the culprit and they are fined R1 000.”To report illegal dumping, the following must be noted and sent to Councillor Henning de Wet on 081 4336643:
• Photo/video evidence of the culprit in the act
• The vehicle’s registration number
• Time and date of offence
• Location, address or area of illegal dumping
