Richards Bay yoga demo marks new record

The momentous occasion went on record and was certified by the Amazing Olympia World Records

Richard’s Bay was host to the inaugural largest yoga demonstration on a floating platform last Saturday when the Sivananda World Peace Foundation hosted its 8th International Yoga Day at the Zululand Yacht Club.

The momentous occasion went on record and was certified by the Amazing Olympia World Records, with 35 people having completed the hour-and-a-half common yoga protocol, meeting all necessary safety requirements.

The event attracted 350 participants and thousands tuning in from around the globe via the live stream.

Foundation founder Prince Ishwar Ramlutchman Mabheka Zulu said they were delighted to be able to carry out the feat.

As well as being a record breaker, the event also promoted health, wellness and social cohesion.’When this idea came about, we immediately received the support of various stakeholders such as the NSRI, Zululand Yacht Club,

Zululand Multi Sport Club, 1st Richards Bay Sea Scouts and Rob Banwell.

‘All cultures, ethnic groups and communities were represented, and it intertwined with our theme ‘Yoga for Health, Wellness and Humanity‘.

‘Our Richards Bay event set the pace leading up to our event in Durban last Sunday, which was a massive success with over 2 000 people in attendance and supported by the Department of Health to promote health and wellness through yoga.

‘Yoga is a medium in which we can achieve social cohesion, peace and harmony, and over the past two months we have been to schools across the province to highlight the benefits of yoga to students.

‘We feel students need to be taught yoga to encourage them to concentrate more in their studies.

‘Yoga is essentially a discipline which brings harmony to all walks of life, and thus it is known for disease prevention, health promotion and management of many lifestyle-related disorders,’ said Ramlutchman.

Commending the foundation on the record achievement in Richards Bay, Minister of Finance Nomusa Dube-Ncube said it was a milestone for the province and South Africa at large, and pledged the department’s support in promoting yoga in communities.

‘Emerging from the Covid-19 pandemic which threatened to annihilate life on earth, the practice of yoga is one of the practices that should be embraced by people.

‘Because of its health benefits, yoga is not meant only for those among us who practice a certain religion. It is fulfilling and it keeps us content.

‘We acknowledge the work of the Sivananda World Peace Foundation in South Africa, mainly in the field of building schools, erecting monuments, building halls, creating oneness among the people of KZN through social cohesion, and promoting yoga in schools and rural communities.

‘We are at a critical time where our people need calmness and tranquillity in their lives for health and spiritual upliftment, and on behalf of the provincial government, we pledge our support for this practice and its benefits.’
