Immigration on the rise

Approximately 2.9 million refugees live in South Africa

World Refugee Day is commemorated annually on 20 June in solidarity with women, children and men who are displaced from their country of origin due to threats, war and violence.

South Africa houses the highest number of immigrants on the African continent – although the number is believed to be higher than the recorded statistics as many are unauthorised immigrants.

Despite the economic challenges, South Africa will undoubtedly see an increase in immigrants in the future.

In contrast, according to an article by the Migration Policy Institute, the number of South Africans leaving the country, specifically black professionals, is on the rise.

Due to the growing population and decrease in economic growth opportunities, more locals have set their eyes abroad.
