Boxer ready to bring home the coveted WBF belt

Three young boxers from the University of Zululand (Unizulu), fighting under Team Skeleton Boxing Club are preparing for their biggest fights yet as they look forward to participating in a spectacular evening of boxing at the Greyville Convention Centre in Durban.

Mduduzi Memela, Bathabile Ziqubu and Smiso Buthelezi will leave it all in the ring on Sunday, when they come up against tough opponents and challenge for the vacant Junior Bantamweight and WBF Lightweight title honours.

Hosted by the Department of Sport and Recreation and Boxing SA, this prestigious event is set to attract scores of boxing and martial arts supporters, as well as potential sponsors and promoters for the amateur fighters.

This marks a huge milestone in restoring and growing the popularity of the sport in both the district and province.

Smiso Buthelezi plans to knock out his opponent within the first 4 rounds

And with just a few days of preparation time to go, Lightweight title contender Smiso ‘The Tractor’ says he feels more than ready to bring home the coveted WBF belt.

‘My team and I have been preparing for a long time. I feel we are unstoppable now and much more confident about this fight because I am trained by the best coach who says I am ready. I am as sharp as I need to be to win this title,’ he said.

Smiso added that, although he would love to knock out his opponent Siphesihle Mntungwa in the early rounds, it would be a great privilege to do the distance and gain some experience by staying in the ring longer.

Bathabile Ziqubu will face a tough opponent when she takes on Themba Zuma, for the vacant South Africa Female Junior Bantamweight Title.

Mduduzi, who used to train with former champion Dr 3 Seconds, said he always feels a bit agitated in the run-up to a fight because of not being able to wait very long before putting his opponent on the ground.

Mduduzi Memela cannot wait to step in the ring on Sunday, where he will come up against Lucky Hobyane in a title elimination bout

His fight is an elimination bout, with no belt on the line. However, a win for him will guarantee a title contention in future, and possibly sponsors.

‘I will use every skill and trick that I have learnt to make sure I win this fight. I will hit my opponent with an upper cut and ensure he feels it.

‘My aim is to finish the fight in under 3 or 4 rounds, the rest of the rounds he can finish by himself at home,’ stated Muduzi.
