BEWARE: Don’t fall for ‘parcel scam’

The recipient receives a message saying a parcel cannot be delivered as the label is damaged

Law enforcement authorities have warned South Africans against falling for the latest scam doing the rounds on social media.

The ‘parcel scam’, which has been in circulation before, is a message that a person will receive via SMS or WhatsApp.

To appear legitimate, the message includes the recipient’s name and says, ‘this is the last notice regarding the failed payment’.

The message includes a link which, when clicked, states that there is a parcel for the recipient, that cannot be delivered as the label is damaged.

They ask for the recipient’s personal details and a small fee for a new label so the parcel can be delivered.

Once the ‘small fee’ has been paid, the scammed recipient has lost their money and never sees the so-called package.

Remember that if you did not order anything, or if a message with a clickable link appears too good to be true, it probably is.

Be vigilant and don’t fall for such scams.
