Become a mental health support group leader

In efforts to encourage a sense of community for those suffering from mental health issues, the online support group leader training webinar series will commence on 1 June

WITH over 160 support groups across the country, the South African Depression and Anxiety Group (SADAG) is hosting a free Online Support Group Leader Training Webinar Series.

These support groups help provide a safe and supportive space for people suffering from mental health issues such as anxiety, depression, trauma, and bipolar disorder.

The aim of the training is to develop more support groups, generate awareness and allow easy accessibility for those who need aftercare supplementary support.

The webinar series will comprise six sessions followed by assessments.

SADAG support group leader Lindiwe Nkolombe says support groups help in gaining a sense of belonging as you are gathered with people who have similar experiences as your own.

‘In a support group, one is able to realise they are not alone. Members feel understood because others are experiencing similar situations,’ she said.

Here is what will be covered in the six-part training:

• What is a support group?

• Who should join or start a support group?

• Training and preparing you to become a volunteer support group leader

• Preparing your support group

• Launching your own support group

The webinars will take place weekly on a Wednesday between 10 and 11am, from 1 June – 6 July

If you, or someone you know, are interested in starting a mental health support group in your area, register for part 1 of the series, ‘An introduction to support groups’.
