Water tank donation to sustain Ulundi co-operative

'The dream was to assist the community by tackling hunger while creating jobs'

Ulundi co-operatives supporting the most vulnerable communities have received a boost with the donation of two water tanks.

Mayor Wilson Ntshangase committed to supporting the Umgushane Co-operative in eQwasha when he visited last Tuesday.

This co-op specialises in growing vegetables and is the initiative of Mazwabo Madela and his wife, Nompumelelo.

Madela said he came up with the idea after retiring some years ago. The dream was to assist the community by tackling hunger while creating jobs.

‘I invested about R25 000 in the water irrigation system, which included pipes and a water pump with water from the nearby stream.

‘We then involved some members of the community in this co-op,’ he explained.

Ntshangase said they would donate two water tanks to help them work effectively.

‘I am impressed by the work being done by this co-operative. This should be motivation for others to do the same.

‘We appreciate the fact that they are now selling products to big chain stores around Ulundi.

‘We call on all supermarkets to support this co-operative and grow the local economy of our area,’ said Ntshangase.
