Residents are increasingly concerned by the excessive rubble and other pollutants that are choking the Mzingwenya River in Esikhaleni, J1 area.
One concerned resident, Khulekani Hlongwane, said the waste is unbearable in terms of sight and smell.

‘People throw all types of waste ranging from used nappies and sanitary towels to plastics and rotten plants and grass,’ he said.
‘There is also a septic tank
nearby which has waste flowing from it into the river.’
‘The conditions are dangerous especially because, in some instances, children from the neighbourhood swim and play in the river.’
Hlongwane has tried to burn some of the waste that has piled up, but people continue to dump in the area.
‘I think the best possible solution is to have the municipality provide bins for residents to dispose of their waste,’ he said.
Despite attempts, the Eyethu Bay Watch was unable to reach a municipal representative for comment.
