Two decades of entertainment

Starting on the numerically apt 20 May, Umfolozi plans a host of celebratory events

The year is 2002. Thabo Mbeki is president, Mark Shuttleworth becomes the first African in space, Spider-Man dominates the box office, and Nelly’s ‘Hot in Here’ plays on every radio station. But most importantly, it’s the year Umfolozi opened its doors to the public.

Although not yet part of the Peermont family, Tusk Umfolozi quickly established itself as a mainstay in the uMhlathuze area, offering a casino destination full of vibrant colours, and themed for the Zululand region.

In 2010, Umfolozi joined the Peermont group and became Umfolozi Hotel, Casino and Convention Resort, sporting a facelift and a host of new, modern additions.

Aiming to provide a central, multi-functional resort on this tourist route, a Peermont Metcourt Hotel, conference centre, multipurpose entertainment and events arena (the famous Jabulani Dome) and an upgraded casino complex were all developed, investing R115-million into the transformation.

The new-look Umfolozi was introduced to the public in February 2010 and became a mainstay for business and leisure travellers alike. Since then, the resort has become a hub for local entertainment, and has had the privilege of hosting artists, including Celeste Ntuli, Aunty Rumba, Juanita du Plessis, Riaad Moosa, Prime Circle, Jonathan, Skhumba Hlophe, and many more.

Plenty more to come

‘Twenty years is an important milestone for us,’ says Umfolozi general manager Charlene Ludick. ‘And we couldn’t have done it without the support of our guests, suppliers and employees over the years. To celebrate, we have many fun activities and promotions planned between 20 May and 20 June, and we’re inviting everyone to join.’

Team work makes the dream work

Starting on the numerically apt 20 May, Umfolozi plans a host of celebratory events to thank patrons, including commemorative merchandise, birthday cupcakes and chocolates, FreePlay offers, competitions and special celebratory entertainment.

Umfolozi’s future looks bright and, despite the pandemic, the call of the Zulu drums has patrons returning.

‘We used this time to make some improvements, like opening a brand new Beef Baron Grillhouse, and upgrading and expanding our world-class gaming Privé which brought in guests from as far as Durban,’ says Ludick, who teases there is still much more to come.
