Applications open for relief grants

The application includes the option for beneficiaries to receive their grant from specific supermarkets

Applications for the new round of R350 Social Relief of Distress (SRD) Grants have opened.

The application includes the option for beneficiaries to receive their grant from any Pick n Pay, Boxer, Shoprite, Checkers or USave supermarkets.

Beneficiaries are encouraged to include this option.

South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) beneficiaries who collect their payouts at the South African Post Office (SAPO) are requested to withdraw their grant at a supermarket or ATM during May.

Anyone using a phone to apply only for the grant, and chooses the Post Office as collection point, can indicate when they would like to withdraw their grant from the above-mentioned stores.

Beneficiaries who share a cellphone to apply for the grant can only collect the grant from a Post Office branch.

Recipients of the R350 Covid relief grant do not have to visit the Post Office to ask about funds available. They can check online at https://srd.sassa.gov.za/sc19/status.

To apply for the relief grant, visit https://srd.sassa.gov.za, or contact SASSA on 0800 601 011.

Report criminal activity
Post Offices have two separate queues: One for customers who receive the Covid-19 grant and one for other transactions. This ensures the shortest possible waiting time for all customers.

The new round of SRD applications has also raised incidents of self-appointed ‘queue marshals’ outside Post Offices asking for bribes to jump the line. The SA Post Office advises beneficiaries not to pay bribe or solicit a bribe.

Anyone who is exposed to this practise should collect as much evidence as possible and report the incident to the police.

Witnesses can also call the Post Office’s toll-free crime hotline on 0800 020 070. All reports are followed up.
