Drive with caution at N2 uMhlali bridge diversion

The warning comes after three serious single-vehicle accidents in just 24 hours

Arrive Alive urges motorists using the N2 north of Durban to exercise caution at the uMhlali river bridge diversion.

This after at least three serious accidents in 24 hours in the vicinity, including one involving a fully-laden long distance bus at 2am today (Monday).

According to IPSS Medical Rescue paramedics on scene, the bus was transporting wedding guests from uMzimkhulu to Nongoma. It reportedly hit the concrete barriers at the diversion, and rolled over, resulting in numerous entrapments. Nine patients with injuries ranging in severity were transported by various ambulance services to hospital for further medical care.

The other two accidents at the uMhlali bridge diversion occurred on Saturday night. IPSS attended both single-vehicle accidents, working with Kwadukuza Fire Department whose members extricated entrapped patients.

The uMhlali river bridge diversion is likely to be in place for some time, owing to the severity of the flood damage.

Motorists are urged to plan their journey accordingly, allowing extra time for delays. Be extra careful after dark when road barriers are perhaps more difficult to see.
