Richards Bay schools commemorate World Earth Day

School's gathered at the John Ross College school hall for the fun and enlightening event which highlighted the impact of the climate crisis.

The South Durban Community Environmental Alliance (SDCEA) hosted a schools’ World Earth Day event at John Ross College in Richards Bay last Friday.

Pupils designed posters highlighting the negative effects of pollution on the earth

Birdswood Secondary, Aquadene Secondary, Lizwi High, Birdsview Secondary and Ntongande High gathered at the John Ross College school hall for the fun and enlightening event which highlighted the importance of the day and the impact of the climate crisis.

SDCEA’s just energy transition and environmental justice project officer Tanica Naidoo explained: ‘This year’s theme ‘Invest in Our Planet’ encourages everyone to be accounted for and accountable.

‘Earth Day should be celebrated every day, not just one day a year.’

Pupils performed skits aligned to World Earth Day

Before the event, pupils were tasked with preparing skits, poetry, songs and posters depicting what Earth Day means to them.

These performances were showcased later in the day, with awards handed out.
