Sponsor-a-Child at Thuthukani Special School

In 2021, only 15% of the parents were able to pay school fees

With many families coming from disadvantaged backgrounds, the pupils at Thuthukani Special School in Empangeni require assistance from kindhearted community members.

In 2021, only 15% of the parents were able to pay school fees, which makes running the school incredibly difficult.

To alleviate the financial burden, the school is appealing to concerned citizens to sponsor one child – or more if they can.

‘Most of our learners come from poor socio-economic backgrounds and, as a result, the school governing body (SGB) writes off all unpaid school fees every year.

‘This leaves Thuthukani with a large shortfall in the budget set to meet each learner’s basic educational needs,’ said school principal and advocate Martie Combrink.

‘Sponsor-a-Child is a fundraising project where a member of the community can pay school fees for one learner at R240 a month.

‘Members are welcome to sponsor more than one child on a monthly basis.

‘This builds a regular source of smaller donations that we can use to cover all those aspects that school fees should.’

She explained that, while sponsoring a child is the project, the funds are not allocated to one specific child, but rather allocated to the school fees account for the benefit of all pupils.

Any amount contributed towards the school fees of these children with severe to profound disabilities is greatly appreciated and managed by the SGB.
