Save a life: donate blood

In the spirit of giving, donate blood and save up to three lives

IF you want to pay it forward with one small act of kindness, why not consider donating blood?

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) requires over 3 000 blood donations on a daily basis, to meet the demand for this life-saving resource.

Covid-19 restrictions have severely hampered the SANBS’ ability to meet their daily targets, having limited the organisation’s ability to gain access to schools, tertiary institutions and corporates, to host blood drives.

With only three days’ supply for B+ and O+, blood stocks are critically low countrywide.

Five days’ supply is considered adequate stock for the SANBS to supply blood to those in need.

Donating amid Covid-19
Extensive precautionary measures have been taken to ensure donor safety.

Everyone accessing donor clinics is thoroughly screened, and anyone exhibiting flu-like symptoms, or symptoms of infection, is advised to delay donation until they are well.

According to the SANBS, blood donation is still safe during this time, and people confirmed with Covid-19 infection are deferred from donation for a certain length of time.

Where to donate
Zululanders can donate at the Richards Bay blood bank on the lower level of Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre.

Weekend opening hours are as follows: Friday, 29 April 9am-4.30pm; Saturday, 30 April 8.30am-1.30pm; Sunday, 1 May closed.
