Closed Mtubatuba council meeting for election of district councillors

Only council members were allowed to attend because it was anticipated ‘that there might be infighting’.

The Mtubatuba Municipality held a closed council meeting on Monday to elect councillors to serve at uMkhanyakude District Municipality.

Acting head of communications at the municipality, Khulekani Msweli said only council members were allowed to attend because it was anticipated ‘that there might be infighting’.

‘However, the media will be briefed just after the council about the outcome of the meeting,’ Msweli said.

Law enforcement officers were present at the municipality on Monday morning to monitor the situation.

Msweli confirmed that all 45 council members were present at the chamber for the council meeting which was scheduled for 8am.

He also said the meeting had been adjourned to wait for IEC officials.

The meeting comes after a Pietermaritzburg High Court order on Thursday, stating the meeting should be convened within four days.

The court order is the outcome of the IFP’s challenge of the validity of the post-election meeting in November that ended with the election of an ANC-led leadership.

The High Court declared that the exclusion of two IFP councillors from voting on the day was inconsistent with the Constitution and invalid.

The court also ordered that the appointment of some of the councillors as district councillors was inconsistent with the Constitution.
