The City of Umhlathuze says it is engaging Transnet Port Terminals (TPT) in Richards Bay to reduce truck congestion on the John Ross Highway.
The truck backlog has been caused by an ongoing labour dispute which has disrupted operations at the port terminals.
‘The city’s traffic police are currently stopping more heavy vehicles from entering the John Ross Highway, which on its own will create traffic havoc along the N2.
‘We are in talks with Transnet management urging them to advise trucking companies to delay sending trucks to the Port since the backlog is already untenable,’ said City Mayor, Xolani Ngwezi.
TPT workers downed tools on Thursday, demanding to be paid incentive bonuses.
Transnet management said it is engaging striking employees to find a way forward.
