WATCH: Lights go out in Empangeni’s 5th Street

As at 3pm, there was no expected time to restoration of electricity in the affected area

CITY of uMhlathuze Fire and Rescue members wasted no time in extinguishing a substation fire in Empangeni earlier this afternoon (Thursday).

This after a transformer went up in flames shortly before 2pm.

The cause is yet unknown and the whole of 5th Street is affected, with many businesses plunged into darkness.

As at 3pm, there was no estimated time until restoration, although municipal officials were on scene immediately, attending to repairs.
