Mdaka said the water treatment plant at Sikhemelele produces 20 million litres per day, while the one at Mthombothini produces 40 million litres per day.

Both plants were constructed by the national government, he said.

‘That is enough water to supply people. Our major task now is to pump water from these plants to people’s homes,’ said the mayor.

He also said the municipality must ensure Jozini dam is a source of water for local communities and surrounding areas.

Mdaka clarified that the district municipality’s core mandate is water and sanitation, but said it could not ignore its other responsibility of economic development.

He said, of the 150 000 households within uMkhanyakude District, only 28 000 were receiving piped water.
