On its official Facebook page, Inkosi Mtubatuba Municipality, the council’s planned initiative was posted on

Monday but it drew several negative comments.

According to the Facebook post, the plan was conceived during the ongoing Integrated Development Plan (IDP) roadshows in different wards and is an appeal for assistance to help children from destitute families.

Facebook users either pointed out that individuals were making similar donations in their personal capacity and not making a show of it, or questioned why the municipality could not pay for the pads, while others pointed out that a government school-based programme was already in place to address the same concern.

By the early afternoon, around 1.45pm, the post had over 200 comments, some in support of the initiative, and had been shared 10 times.

The municipality’s youth manager, Goodman Mkhwanazi had told the ZO that it is hoped the initiative would run until such a time that it could be part of the municipality’s budget.
