Renewed calls for Richards Bay Airport relocation

The airport has been cited as a critical component to the growth of the city and region's economy

THE relocation of the Richards Bay Airport to a location between Empangeni and eNseleni close to the N2 is again in the spotlight, with renewed calls for development processes to be finalised.

The airport has been cited as a critical component to the growth of the city and region’s economy.

Addressing delegates at last week’s uMhlathuze Business Expo, in partnership with the RBIDZ, Deputy Minister of Trade, Industry and Competition

Nomalungelo Gina said this was key to creating an environment for investment in infrastructure development.

This includes building a larger airport which will improve the ease of doing business in the region.

‘We truly believe this upgrade will allow for the growth of flight volumes in line with growing commercial activities,’ said Gina.

‘It makes no sense for investors flying between Johannesburg and Richards Bay for a three-hour meeting to travel via Durban then spend two hours on the road to Richards Bay.

‘This is a critical development that will open up more opportunities for investment.’

Her sentiments were echoed by King Cetshwayo District Mayor Thami Ntuli whose message was delivered via district speaker, Cllr Ivan Naidoo.

Ntuli said there is a need to upgrade the airport to accommodate international flights, with its relocation near the N2 favourable.

While the project has been in the pipeline for years, uMhlathuze municipal manager Lulamile Mapholoba said progress is being made.

‘We are in discussions with the private sector, Airports Company South Africa (Acsa) and other bodies in the aviation industry to ensure whatever we develop is much bigger than what we have at the moment,’ said Mapholoba.

‘We are working with Treasury to ensure that in the coming 24 to 36 months we will be reporting something more tangible.’
