HILLSIDE ALUMINIUM REDUCTION PLANT: REFRACTORIES

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

South32, Hillside Aluminium is an aluminium smelter located in Richards Bay. The smelter has been in operation for approximately 25 years and utilises the Aluminium Pechiney (AP30)  technology, which produces 720 KT of aluminium annually.

The objective of the Reduction department is to produce liquid aluminium. The plant consists of 3 pot lines with a total of 720 pots that produce liquid aluminium. Each reduction pot is used to produce liquid aluminium for a life cycle of 5 to 6 years.

The refractory pot relining workshop in the Reduction department consists of 6 relining bays, with a seventh storage bay to ensure continuity of work. Pot shells are typically relined during the day shift within 7 days, with refractories left to cure overnight. During peak periods, the inclusion of a night shift team can reduce completion to 5 days. This will result in a maximum of 1 relined shell per day or 7 shells per week. (+/- 86 pots are planned to be relined for FY2022/23 and +/- 168 pots for FY2023/24.)

The cathode sealing workshop uses cast iron to join cathode blocks and cathode bars – working a 12-hour day shift, 14 to 16 cathodes can be sealed per day. A night shift team will further increase this number. This facility can therefore provide sealed cathode blocks for more than 7 pots per week. The Reduction Refractory scope is for 2 suitable vendors to provide the services for the following scope of works:

  • Pot Relining SOW (producing relined shells)
  • Cathode Sealing SOW (producing sealed cathode blocks)
