Mzansi remembers the voice of Winnie Mahlangu

Condolences pour in for radio royalty and first black female radio presenter

Tributes continue to pour in from all walks of life as Mzansi mourns the death of veteran radio personality Winnie ‘Mafungwase’ Mahlangu (88).

Her former employer SABC on Thursday announced the news of her passing, saying she died in hospital.

Mahlangu was the first black female radio presenter at Radio Bantu in 1962 before it changed its name to Radio Zulu, then later Ukhozi FM.

She was known for her warm personality, unique voice, and for her role in women empowerment.

Since she retired in 1993, the legend received the silver Order of Ikhamanga from the presidency.

Ukhozi FM launched the annual Winnie Mahlangu Female Presenter Search competition in her honour, which opened many opportunities for black female presenters.

Since the news of her passing surfaced, many have shared their stories and heartfelt condolences on various social media platforms.
