Richards Bay seniors’ programme promotes social cohesion

The team is in need of soccer equipment such as kits, balls and boots

Using sport as a tool to promote social cohesion and unity in communities, African Solidarity Campaign (AfriSoC) hosted a community engagement session with senior soccer players from Mandlazini.

The event was led by AfriSoC founder Mmindje Kabakilwa Steven, who encouraged the sporty senior citizens of the community to work together for common goals, one of which is to inspire the youth through their life experiences and share their knowledge with the younger generation.

The seniors who are part of their own soccer club ‘Vukucabange Senior Citizens’, comprising of umkhulus and gogos aged 60 to 85, use soccer for recreation and exercise purposes, and as a universal tool for unity.

Steven motivated the seniors to live their lives to the fullest regardless of their age.

‘Using soccer as a form of exercise, they will inspire the younger generation to follow in their footsteps to living healthier lifestyles,’ he said.

The team is in need of soccer equipment such as kits, balls and boots.

Any other donations will also be welcome. To support these active senior citizens, contact 082 7012483.
