Weather conditions can affect your security systems

Homeowners should look for anything on their property that could cause damage when extreme weather is experienced

The new year has begun with some extreme weather conditions across the country, including heavy rains and hail storms, and temperatures well into the 30s.

Such conditions can have a negative impact on a household security system.

‘Regular maintenance of a home security system is something every homeowner should remember. The kind of weather we’re seeing across South Africa makes this maintenance even more important,’ says Charnel Hattingh, Fidelity ADT head of marketing and communications.

Homeowners should look for anything on their property that could cause damage when extreme weather is experienced.

‘Pay attention to anything that could damage your security system, such as if a tree could blow over and knock down your electric fence.

‘It is also a good idea to check the tensioning of the electric fence as it can shrink or expand depending on colder or warmer weather, and can possibly lead to false alarms.

‘Once you have experienced extreme weather, it is recommended that you see whether the alarm system has been damaged.

‘Armed response companies can send a technician to test the system for you.

‘Your security needs to change with the changing weather conditions. By following these tips, we hope you will have a peace of mind that your security system is as prepared as you are.’
