With blood stock levels countrywide still at an all time low, patients who rely on lifesaving transfusions remain at risk.
The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) is urging new and existing donors to visit their nearest blood donor centre as soon as possible, to help boost the dwindling levels.
There is 2.9 days’ blood supply, and SANBS needs groups B+, AB- and O+.
SANBS strives to have at least five days’ stock on hand to sustain the country’s need.
Richards Bay Blood Donor Centre in the Boardwalk Inkwazi Shopping Centre urges community members to take just 30 minutes out of their day to donate blood.
The centre is open from Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm, and on Saturdays until 2pm.
With limited access to mobile blood drive venues owing to Covid-19, and the closure of schools and universities, the blood service’s ability to get its required 3 500 units a day is constrained.
In an attempt to increase blood stocks and continue saving lives, SANBS in KZN will operate on extended daily hours, making it more convenient for donors.
Donor centres still adhere to strict Covid-19 infection prevention protocols to ensure the safety of both donors and staff members.
Blood is essential all year round and SANBS depends on regular donors to keep blood stocks at optimal levels to help meet the demand.
