Fearless Fred strikes again

Fred Lubbe called into action in Underberg

THINKING he would head to the mountains for a break from, among other things, the many calls to capture snakes, local icon ‘Fearless’ Fred Lubbe should have known better.

His holiday in Underberg had hardly begun when on Monday he was called into action.

‘I had put on what has been called my ‘mamba shirt’ because of the number of times I was in the ZO wearing that particular checked shirt when holding a mamba I had caught.

‘I joked it was because I would catch one today,’ said Fred on Monday.

‘Next thing came a frantic warning from a Cape robin chat in the tree and there was this rinkhals of just under one metre, slithering through the garden.’

Never travelling without his tools of the trade, Fred soon dived into his car boot and grabbed his catching tongs.

‘The rest is history, and we will release it in a safe place,’ said a happy Fred who had obviously been having withdrawal symptoms and wishing for yet another challenge of the reptile kind.
