Men encouraged to speak out against abuse

Durban-based Saps Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Detective Warrant Officer Nervarge 'Nivi' Lutchminarain said many men and boys are embarrassed to speak up about or report abuse

‘Many men are ashamed and afraid to report abuse to the police as they fear being ridiculed. But now is the time to speak out against abuse.’

This was the sentiment of Durban-based Saps Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences Detective Warrant Officer Nervarge ‘Nivi’ Lutchminarain.

He said many men and boys are embarrassed to speak up about or report abuse for fear of being laughed at.

‘There are many men who are emotionally, physically, and verbally abused daily by women, but are afraid to speak about their experience because their communities and peers make a mockery of them.

‘Men and boys also need support, they are also human. It’s time society stands up against abuse of men,’ he said.

Lutchminarain was born and bred in Tongaat and has racked up 28 years of service after joining the Saps in 1993.
