N2 stretch in KZN among top 10 most dangerous roads in SA

some road safety tips

THE 48.4km stretch on the N2 between Durban and Tongaat is listed as the sixth most dangerous road to drive in the country.

This is according to the Road Accident Fund (RAF) which released a list of the top 10 most dangerous routes in South Africa.

Topping the list is the N2 between East London and uMtata, with the N2 from uMtata to Kokstad second, and the N2 between Mokopane and Polokwane third.

Serious road accidents, many fatal, occur on the N2 in KZN, which is the main north/south route in the province.
Utilised daily by hundreds of thousands of vehicles, from small passenger cars to heavy-goods trucks, accidents cause major delays to commuters, not to mention the devastation to families of those involved.

With the festive season upon us, emergency services urge motorists to stay alert and be vigilant when on the roads.

Here are some road safety tips from Arrive Alive:
• Obey the rules of the road and carry your driver’s licence with you
• Do not get stranded without fuel – always plan ahead where you will refuel
• Avoid driving after dark if possible
• Make sure your vehicle is roadworthy
• Take breaks every two hours or 200km
• Don’t drink and drive
• Drive defensively
• Avoid distractions
• Stay within the speed limit at all times
• Be especially alert when approaching traffic light intersections
• Avoid driving in the blind spot of other vehicles
• Be cautious when driving alone, and don’t stop in remote areas
