City of uMhlathuze elects new mayor

Cllr Xolani Ngwezi was elected unopposed

AS expected, and despite opposition attempts to stall the process, the City of uMhlathuze council today (Friday) elected and swore in a new mayor after Cllr Nkonzoyakhe Donda resigned from the post.

Cllr Xolani Ngwezi was sworn in as councillor before being elected as an Executive Committee (Exco) member and subsequently mayor.

He was elected without opposition.

Focusing on service delivery, Mayor Ngwezi said no city official would go on Christmas leave when communities have no electricity or water.

He has further given the municipality a 120-day deadline to repair potholes, and said traffic lights must be fixed and replaced.

‘My question is, why does it take more than four months to fix traffic lights? I don’t expect the answer now, but it has to be done.’

Ngwezi has served as a member of parliament and on the National Council of Provinces.
