Sassa to re-assess terminated grants of public servants

This means every beneficiary has a responsibility to inform Sassa of any changes to their personal circumstances

The South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) has requested all public servants whose grants were terminated under the provisions of the Social Assistance Act, 2004 to come forward for an assessment.

Sassa KZN spokesperson Sandy Godlwana said one of their responsibilities is to ensure the information utilised for grant payments is current, and grant payments are only paid to qualifying beneficiaries.

This means every beneficiary has a responsibility to inform Sassa of any changes to their personal circumstances, such as changes in their marital or employment status.

In September, a routine check of Persal and Persol systems revealed that many public servants were receiving social grants while Sassa did not have updated information on their income.

‘Sassa suspended 74 871 grants in KZN in line with regulations. The majority of the grants suspended were for employees who appear in the government employees’ payment system Persal.

‘These included interns, Expanded Public Works Programme workers, Amakhosi, Izinduna, and general workers.

‘For affected beneficiaries to continue receiving their grants in line with regulations, Sassa has deemed it necessary that all these beneficiaries should be reassessed in terms of qualification criteria.

‘These assessments will be done at Sassa local offices. Applicants need to submit the ID document of the beneficiary, birth certificates of children for Child Support Grants, three months’ bank statements of the applicant and spouse if married, a payslip of the beneficiary and spouse if married, and proof of residence,’ she said.
